Sobre El Oso

<p><strong>Heritage</strong></p>

  • Verraco of El Oso: The Vetton sculpture that gives the village its name. Carved in granite and of large dimensions, it probably represents a bull or a bear and is one of the best-preserved verracos in the Moraña.
  • Parish Church of Saint Peter the Apostle: Simple temple, in the traditional Morañego style, built with brick and masonry. It preserves elements from the 16th–18th centuries and is the religious heart of the municipality.
  • Landscape of the Moraña: Vast cereal plains, perfect for observing steppe birds such as bustards, little bustards, or harriers.
  • Lagoons of El Oso (Natural Heritage): Seasonal wetland of great ecological value, restored in the middle of cereal plains. It is a privileged site for observing cranes, geese, and other migratory birds. One of the best birdwatching spots in northern Ávila.

<p><strong>Festivities</strong></p>

The town of El Oso celebrates three popular festivals: May 15 (Saint Isidore); first week of September until the 8th (summer festival); second Sunday of November (Virgin of Remedies). The celebration of “El Febrerito” on the last Saturday of February has gained popularity. These traditional festivals reflect the cultural identity of the town and are moments to share with family and friends and have authentic fun.

<p><strong>Gastronomy</strong></p>

The gastronomy of El Oso follows the tradition of the Moraña and Ávila cuisine:

  • Traditional roasts: lamb and suckling pig.
  • Pastoral migas: with bacon, chorizo, and paprika.
  • Garlic soups: humble and emblematic dish of Castile.
  • Beans from El Barco de Ávila: frequently used in stews and casseroles.
  • Local cured meats: chorizo, blood sausage, ham.
  • Homemade desserts: flan, custards, and ring-shaped pastries.
