Moderate About this route
This route, of just over 22 kms, starts from the laundry of Torrijas and will take us to cross the river Torrijas, enjoy the plain of the Nava, the surroundings of the Hermitage of Santa Margarita and some beautiful views of the village on the way back through fun dirt tracks.
We leave the village towards Arcos de las Salinas and, just 500 meters from the exit, we turn left to take a dirt track that will lead us to the river Torrijas (which we cross over a small bridge).
A few meters further on, we turn left to connect with another dirt track (which becomes paved about 3 kms from the exit), which we will follow until we reach the Hermitage of Santa Margarita, from the 14th century (at 10 kms from the start).
Before the Hermitage we will pass through the Nava de Torrijas, an extensive plain that stands out for the area in which it is located. It is a landscape created by fluvial erosion and complex processes of dissolution of the underlying rocks. This geological phenomenon is known as “polje”, which means “steppe”.
During the route we can enjoy centuries-old junipers, common juniper and creeping juniper, poplars, holm oaks and numerous cereal crop fields. We may also encounter grazing livestock as well as golden eagles, vultures, falcons, owls, wild boars, foxes or wildcat. We find ourselves in a place of great environmental value that leaves no one indifferent.
Next to the hermitage starts a dirt track that continuously ascends, leading us to the highest point of the route, around 1,500 meters above sea level. We are already on our way back to Torrijas, enjoying ups and downs on well-maintained tracks, as well as magnificent views of the village and the Astrophysical Observatory of Javalambre, located on the Peak of the Vulture and well worth a visit.
Upon arrival, we can rest and refresh ourselves at the spring next to the laundry.
