Archaeological Park of Alarcos

Alarcos, an archaeological park very important to the history of the Castilian Reconquista and the Iberian world in the province of Ciudad Real. In medieval times, it was a fortified city and the capital of the southern region of Toledo. After being destroyed in the Battle of Alarcos on July 18, 1195, the survivors were moved to a nearby village called Pozo Seco de Don Gil, which was reestablished as the new capital by order of Alfonso X the Wise and was named Villa Real; later it was granted the title of city, becoming Ciudad Real.

The urban wall of Alarcos is located in the abandoned village of Alarcos, about 8 kilometers from Ciudad Real, on a hill that rises on the left bank of the Guadiana River. This walled enclosure is part of what is known as the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Alarcos, an important Iberian-Medieval site declared an Archaeological Park, which can be reached via the N-430 road towards the town of Piedrabuena.
