Sobre Colmenar de Oreja

Heritage

The heritage of Colmenar stands out for the richness and variety of its monumental, religious, civil, and industrial architecture, alongside an important set of working houses from the 17th to the 19th centuries that integrate ethnographic elements such as caves and wineries.

The urban nucleus is organized around the Main Square, a prominent example of a traditional Castilian square, next to the Zacatín tunnel, forming an urban ensemble of great architectural and urban value. The parish church of Santa María la Mayor, the Convent of the Incarnation, several historical hermitages, and the remains of the Franciscan convent stand out.

The civil and industrial heritage includes the municipal theater, the old market, the cream of tartar factory, the jar and lime kilns, the historical fountains, and the Pilarejo bridge. The traditional residential architecture in stone masonry, with gates, stone jambs, and underground wineries, is also significant.

The ensemble is completed with an archaeological heritage yet to be studied, key to understanding the origins and historical evolution of the city.

Celebrations

The main celebrations of Colmenar de Oreja begin with the Fiestas del Santísimo Cristo del Humilladero (April 26 – May 4), considered the main festivities of the municipality. During these days, there are bull runs, novice bullfights —including events like the Copa Chenel and cutting contests—, musical performances, and the traditional Guisos Contest.

In August, the Fiestas de San Roque (August 14–16) take place, combining tradition and festive atmosphere with the popular Shouting Contest “Don’t yell at me, I can’t see you!”, foot races, sardine grilling, and a procession.

In September, the Fiestas de la Virgen de la Soledad (September 11–14) are celebrated, patronal festivities that bring together religious acts and traditional activities.

During the months of November or December, the Fiesta del Mosto y la Chacina stands out, focused on local gastronomy and typical products. In December, the Plaza Mayor hosts the Belén Viviente de Colmenar de Oreja, one of the most important cultural events of the year.

The festive calendar is completed with the Carnival, which includes a large parade through the historic center and a popular celebration in the Plaza Mayor.

Gastronomy

The cuisine of Colmenar combines traditional dishes and local sweets. The highlights are Patatas Chulas, Carne al desarreglo, and Pista Vaquero, slowly cooked beef stews; Pozas, bread filled with oil, tomato, and marinade; and sweets like Pelotas de Fraile, pastafloras, and wine doughnuts.
