Sobre Tortosa

Heritage

Tortosa stands out for its extraordinary historical heritage, the result of the different civilizations that have left their mark on the city throughout the centuries. The Ebro River is the backbone of its identity and accompanies some of its most emblematic spaces. Among its main monuments, the Catedral de Santa María stands out, with its Gothic interior and Baroque façade, as well as the Royal Colleges, considered the highest expression of Renaissance in Catalonia.

The city also preserves an important defensive ensemble formed by walls, fortifications, and the Castle of the Zuda, a symbol of its Andalusian past. It also keeps alive the memory of key periods such as the Middle Ages, with its ancient Jewish quarter, and the Spanish Civil War, with shelters and historical spaces that can be visited. In addition, its modernist architecture and the cultural value of its streets and squares make Tortosa an essential destination for those seeking history, art, and heritage legacy.

Celebrations

In Tortosa, several celebrations stand out throughout the year. The most important are the Fiestas de la Cinta, held in early September in honor of the Virgin of the Cinta, featuring popular events such as parades with giants, correfoc, processions, flower and fruit offerings, confetti wars, and fireworks. Also notable is the Fiesta del Renacimiento, which transforms the old town into a 16th-century city for four days in July, with historical decorations, camps, taverns, and thousands of participants dressed in period costumes; it is declared a National Tourist Interest Festival and is one of the most prominent historical recreations in Catalonia. Additionally, the official local festivals are usually celebrated on May 25 and September 7, coinciding with the week of the Cinta. Meanwhile, the district of Jesús, belonging to Tortosa, celebrates its main festival on the second weekend of July.

Gastronomy

The cuisine of Tortosa combines the best of land and sea, with standout products such as DOP Baix Ebre-Montsià oil, Delta rice, seafood, cod, artichokes, and traditional sausages. The wines of the DO Terra Alta and typical sweets such as pastissets, menjar blanc, and Queen's Soup also stand out.
