Sobre Castilfrío de la Sierra

Heritage

Manor Houses

Castilfrío preserves several heraldic houses from the 17th century, built of stone and linked to the cattle ranchers of the Mesta. They form a well-preserved mountain architectural ensemble.

Dolmen Alto de la Tejera

Unique visitable dolmen in the province of Soria, dated between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago. It is a megalithic funerary monument of which only the foundations remain today, having been plundered over time. Its discovery in 1985 confirmed the presence of megalithic architecture in the Alto Duero. The area is fenced, with a information panel and a small viewpoint.

The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption combines Gothic elements from the 16th century and Baroque elements from the 18th century, with a large Romanist altarpiece, numerous canvases, a Romanesque font, and a Baroque organ. It preserves notable pieces such as the Virgin of la Carrascala, ancient cabinets, and a Roman funerary stele on the exterior.

The Hermitage of Our Lady of Carrascal (16th century), linked to a Romanesque image from the 13th century, was rehabilitated in 2002 and is one of the most imposing temples in the region.

The Hermitage of Humilladero, or of Ecce-Homo, is now in ruins.

Celebrations

The 15th of May is celebrated San Isidro, when the young women carry in procession the image of the Virgin of Carrascal to ask for protection for the fields.

The big festival takes place on the second weekend of September, in honor of Our Lady of the Assumption, with a pilgrimage, auction of banzos, street parties, games, and a popular meal of caldereta prepared by the merineros.

Gastronomy

The cuisine of Castilfrío de la Sierra reflects the pastoral and mountainous tradition of Tierras Altas. Typical are the lamb dishes, cured meats, migas, caldereta, and stews made with game. Also noteworthy are the sweet blood sausages and pickled dishes, as well as traditional sweets like rosquillos, torrijas, and other homemade preparations that accompany the festivities of the municipality.
