Sobre San Asensio

Heritage

San Asensio stands out for the Castle of Davalillo (13th century), a Romanesque fortress located on a hill by the Ebro, and the nearby Hermitage of Santa María de Davalillo (1700), next to a medieval necropolis.

It also features the Church of the Ascension (15th-16th centuries), with Gothic and Renaissance elements, and several examples of civil architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries, reflecting the economic boom of the town.

The surroundings of the ancient Monastery of La Estrella complete a historical ensemble linked to the medieval and religious past of the locality.

Celebrations

Among its celebrations, San Isidro (May 15), patron saint of farmers, stands out, with a bonfire on the eve and lunch at the cooperatives. In spring, the traditional Pilgrimage to Davalillo is celebrated, recalling the historical transfer of the population.

Well known is the Battle of Clarete, in July, which brings together thousands of people around the municipality's most emblematic wine.

The Patron Saint Festivities in honor of the Virgin of Davalillo, at the beginning of September, fill the town with popular events, pilgrimages, and celebrations for ten days.

Gastronomy

San Asensio is known as the “Cradle of Clarete”, a light and fresh wine that is central to its winemaking tradition. Its cuisine is based on Riojan gastronomy, with dishes such as Riojan potatoes, grilled lamb chops, cured meats, and garden products, always accompanied by its renowned wines.
