Sobre Estella-Lizarra

Heritage

The heritage of Estella-Lizarra is one of the richest and most monumental in Navarre, a result of its historical importance on the Camino de Santiago. Civil buildings such as the Palace of the Kings of Navarre, the best example of civil Romanesque architecture in the community, stand out alongside the Old Palace of Justice and Town Hall, the Palace of the Governor, and Renaissance palaces like the Palace of Sancristóbal. In the religious sphere, the Basilica of the Puy, the Romanesque churches of San Miguel, San Pedro de la Rúa, and Santo Sepulcro, as well as the Church of San Juan, are prominent. This legacy is completed by the conventual complexes of Santa Clara and the Recolet Conceptionists, in addition to Santa María Jus del Castillo, which reinforce the image of a city deeply connected to history, art, and medieval spirituality.

Celebrations

The main festivities of Estella-Lizarra are concentrated in the August Patronal Festivals, which always begin on a Friday —the one before the first Sunday of the month— with the launching of the rocket from the town hall, known as the Friday of Giants, and last for a week in honor of Saint Andrew and the Virgin of Puy. During these days, the city dresses in white and red and hosts numerous popular events such as the Bajadicas del Puy, processions, pañueladas, bull runs, bullfighting festivities, music, dances, the Dance of the Era, and celebrations organized by the peñas, with the bagpipe and the drum as emblematic sounds.

In addition, on May 25, the Puy Festivals are celebrated, dedicated to the patroness and also known as Youth Festivals, with religious and festive events, popular food, and the launching of the rocket, organized by the corresponding group and with a prominent role for the youth.

Gastronomy

The cuisine of Estella-Lizarra stands out for its strong Navarrese roots and the use of high-quality local products. Traditional dishes such as pochas, piquillo peppers, vegetables from the Ega river, artisan meats and sausages, and game recipes are very representative. All of this is accompanied by excellent wines from the Navarra Denomination of Origin, which complete a simple, flavorful cuisine that is closely tied to tradition and the rural environment.
